Nominal duration: 500 hours
Course length:
From 8 weeks intensive
full-time (with online components, and RPL), or 2
months full-time, or 4 months part-time BASIC
LEVEL FOR ADULTS This
course is designed for adult learners with little or no
formal education. You will learn very basic English skills,
starting with the alphabet. The
course covers the basics (basic introductions, basic
instructions, basic messages, etc). This course is suitable
if you have had very
little English training and you can use very
simple English.
One important
outcome is that students who complete the course will be prepared
and eligible for the Certificate I in ESL (Access). Another
outcome will be that they will have the basic English survival
skills required for daily living in an English-speaking country.
Valuable
green knowledge and skills are incorporated in this course through
the use of environmental materials as English practice.
Entry levels
A
table of equivalence for entry and exit levels is now provided. This allows DU
English College to set appropriate levels of entry and exit for international students,
regardless of which major English ratings system has been used in the past to
evaluate proficiency.

NOTE 1: It is impossible for any organisation to create an entirely accurate and
valid equivalency table due to the diverse range of English
language level frameworks. The purpose of this approximation is to provide
prospective students with an idea of which course would suit them and of what
exit level they need to achieve in order to be assessed as competent. Further
assessment of the student’s work would confirm the entry level, and for the
exit level, the ISLPR is applied consistently across all student results.
NOTE 2: Whilst the objective of this course is to prepare ESL students for an
English-speaking workplace or for higher education in an English-speaking
institution, no guarantees are made regarding entry into any occupation or
institution.
NOTE 3: For any rating in the table, a student must achieve that minimum level of
proficiency in all macro-skills (not just in one or two macro-skills).
NOTE 4: A student who has completed the Certificate III qualification is eligible
for entry to the Certificate IV; and Certificate IV completion provides
eligibility Diploma entry.
